What is an I-94 Record?

Every nonimmigrant entering the U.S. in a sponsored visa classification (e.g., F, J, or H) receives a Form I-94 Arrival/Departure Record from the Department of Homeland Security at a port of entry. The I-94 confirms the individual’s admission status and authorized period of stay in the U.S.

  • F and J visa holders whose most recent entry was before September 15, 2026: The I-94 generally shows “D/S” (Duration of Status) as the Admit Until Date (AUD).

  • F and J visa holders entering on or after September 15, 2026, and other nonimmigrants: The I-94 will show a specific Admit Until Date (AUD).

Check Your I-94 Record Every Time You Enter the U.S.

A new I-94 record is generally created each time you enter the U.S., except in certain cases involving reentry from an adjacent country.

The I-94 is generally created electronically; no paper document is issued at the port of entry. Visa holders are responsible for checking their I-94 after every international trip and promptly verifying that all information is correct, including the I-94s of all dependents.

As soon as you enter or reenter the U.S., you must check your I-94 to confirm that your admission was recorded correctly, including:

  • Admit Until Date (AUD): A specific date, except “D/S” for eligible F/J admissions made before September 15, 2026.
  • Your Name
  • Your Birthdate
  • Passport Information
  • Date of Entry
  • I-94 recordClass of Admission: Visa Status

Check and Save Your I-94 Records

  1. After each international trip, access and download your most recent I-94 record.

  2. Review your I-94 for accuracy after every reentry, including the I-94 records for each dependent. Keep copies of all current and previous I-94 records for your files.

  3. Your I-94 serves as evidence of your lawful admission to the United States and may be requested by government agencies for purposes unrelated to immigration, such as applying for a driver’s license or Social Security number.

  4. Report your entry information to OISS after each international trip.

  5. If you identify an error on your I-94 or cannot locate your I-94 record in the system, contact your OISS adviser immediately. If your I-94 record is unavailable, provide your OISS adviser with the date you entered the U.S., the airport of arrival, and a copy of your travel reservation or ticket.

I-94 After a Change or Extension of Status Within the U.S.

If you applied for a change of status or extension of status from within the U.S. after your most recent entry, your current I-94 is reflected on your application approval notice (Form I-797). The electronic I-94 record in the system is updated only when you physically reenter the U.S. through a port of entry.
