After the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) published a proposed rule in the Federal Register to end “duration of status” (D/S) for F and J nonimmigrants on August 28, 2025, OISS and Yale quickly responded.
OISS published a post about the proposed rule on our website on the date it was published in the Federal Register. On September 10, 2025, OISS staff members also conducted a town hall on this proposed rule. If you missed it, you can find the recording and presentation slides of the town hall here.
On September 29, the university officially submitted a public comment, where the university “urged DHS to rescind the rule to ensure that the U.S. remains a global destination for students and exchange visitors who support our nation's research enterprise and national interests.”
We would also like to thank the 377 individuals who submitted public comments mentioning Yale, as well as the outreach and campaigns across campus that brought awareness to this proposed rule and its implications for our international community.
The comment period is now closed, but we will be in touch as further information becomes available.
