OISS is excited to recruit our second DEIB Initiatives Fellow through the GSAS Professional Experience (GPE) Fellowship this fall!
We had a wonderful experience with our DEIB Initiatives Fellow this year, Vanessa Bittner, and you can learn more about some of her work by reading through our Statement of Community Values which she helped us create.
Below is a short testimonial from Vanessa about her experience in the fellowship this year.
“When I initially applied for the GPE fellowship at OISS, I did not yet know it was going to become the highlight of my academic year. After working as their Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Initiatives fellow for two semesters, I have gained a new sense of confidence in applying my skills outside of the research world, and am looking forward to further exploring career paths in this field. The mentorship during this fellowship was truly exceptional. I always felt like my suggestions were taken seriously, and my expertise as a sociologist was very clearly valued. I met with my mentor Molly every week to discuss new ideas and how I was progressing on both short- and long-term projects. Apart from some set expectations, I had a lot of freedom in deciding exactly what I wanted to work on, and Molly was always supportive and provided helpful feedback. I am leaving the fellow position feeling like I have accomplished tangible goals, and grateful about this being one of the most fulfilling grad school experiences for me.”
