Announcement

We are pleased to announce that Yale University is launching Sprintax Calculus, a secure, cloud-based software product for nonresident alien tax compliance. Effective immediately, Sprintax Calculus will replace the university’s Foreign National Information System (FNIS) for determining the U.S. tax residency and tax treaty eligibility for international students and scholars.

What This Means

Starting in December 2024, international students and scholars will no longer update their FNIS records for their U.S. tax residency, tax treaty eligibility, and treaty forms (e.g., IRS Form W-8BEN, IRS Form 8233), if applicable. Instead, they will complete their Sprintax Calculus profile and make any future updates directly in Sprintax Calculus. International students and scholars will continue to have access to FNIS until June 30, 2025.

Timeline

In the fall, the International Tax Office contacted international students and scholars with detailed information about the transition from FNIS to Sprintax Calculus. The communication included guidance on accessing the new application, completing your Sprintax Calculus profile, and submitting tax treaty forms for the 2025 calendar year.

Note: Sprintax Calculus will not impact the individual income tax filing process or forms for the 2024 calendar year.

Benefits

Sprintax Calculus will provide international students and scholars with the existing functionality of FNIS as well as with the ability to:

  • Sign treaty forms using E-signatures.
  • Submit documents directly to the University International Tax Department within Sprintax Calculus.
  • Access live chat support through Sprintax Calculus for any questions.
  • Log in using Single Sign-On with a Yale Net ID.
  • Use the mobile-friendly Sprintax Calculus website, accessible from anywhere, including outside the U.S.
  • Import individual tax documents from Sprintax Calculus directly into Sprintax Returns (the individual tax preparation software offered by the Office of International Students and Scholars).

Sprintax Calculus will provide international students and scholars with an improved user experience. We welcome your feedback as we roll out this new application.
