Dear international students and scholars,
Last Friday, we informed you that OISS was reviewing the recently published DHS final rule eliminating Duration of Status (D/S) for F and J nonimmigrants. We are now writing to let you know that our initial analysis, quick facts, frequently asked questions (FAQs), and other resources are now available on the OISS website.
Our website includes:
- An overview of the duration of status, the new rule, and its effective date,
- Quick facts about the new rule,
- A summary of the major changes brought by the new rule and an initial analysis of its anticipated impact on F and J students, scholars, and their dependents,
- Frequently asked questions based on the most common inquiries we have received so far, and
- Additional resources, with more information to be added in the coming weeks.
- We encourage you to review these materials carefully, as many common questions are addressed here.
We would also like to remind you to register for and attend our OISS Town Hall Webinar tomorrow, Thursday, July 23, from 12:00–1:00 p.m. (EDT). During the webinar, we will review the new rule, discuss its practical implications, answer frequently asked questions, and explain how OISS will support our community during this transition.
Please note that our guidance reflects our current understanding of the final rule, its preamble, and the regulatory text as published. Because implementation guidance from DHS, DoS, and other agencies is still developing, and as we continue discussions with government agencies, professional associations, and peer institutions, some of our interpretations and recommendations may evolve. We therefore encourage you to check the OISS website regularly, as we will update our guidance and FAQs whenever new information or clarification becomes available.
In the meantime, please note that we are currently receiving a very high volume of inquiries. We will respond to individual inquiries as quickly as possible when we have answers.
