A partial shut down of the federal government will affect some immigration issues, but not all:
- Airports and CBP will not be effected.
- F-1 OPT and H-1B applications will not be effected as USCIS is fee based and will not shutdown
- If you plan on traveling internationally and will need a new visa to return to the U.S. contact the U.S. consulate to see if their hours of operation have changed. In general visa operations are fee-funded and should not be impacted by a shutdown, but operating status and funding will need to be monitored closely. If visa operations are affected, consular posts will generally only handle diplomatic visas and “life or death” emergencies.
- OISS will continue to monitor the effects of the shutdown and will update this announcement when changes occure.
