Meet Adaolisa from Nigeria, our spotlight for this

Meet Adaolisa from Nigeria, our spotlight for this week’s #HumansOfOISS!

Adaolisa is a Master student in International and Development Economics, marking her inaugural experience studying abroad. Her adaptability in a new country is truly remarkable. In just two days, she tackled settling into her new life - from household essentials to a new phone number, bank account, and grocery shopping. It’s a stark contrast to my initial struggles when I arrived in New Haven, grappling with unfamiliar transport, jet lag, and the maze of grocery stores.

What stands out for Adaolisa is the incredible diversity the USA offers, enriching her academic journey. The culturally vibrant classroom fosters a dynamic learning environment where everyone is open to understanding different perspectives. This diversity breathes life into education.

Adaolisa’s impression of New Haven? The enchanting transition to fall, with leaves changing colors. Her classes at Luce Hall allow her to witness the stunning spectacle of trees turning yellow - an experience she didn’t have back in Nigeria. New Haven’s peaceful charm has captivated her.

When asked about what drew her to Yale, Adaolisa shared her excitement about the Yale African Scholars Program. She was pleasantly surprised to find such a prestigious university dedicated to nurturing young talents from Africa. It’s a place where she can truly be herself. From her very first week during orientation, Adaolisa felt Yale’s genuine appreciation for diversity.

Beyond the classroom, Adaolisa is a caring friend who shares a love for anime, K-dramas and a big bread lover .
