The information on this page provides an overview of the initial steps required of scholars who need a U.S. visa, regardless of which visa category they may be using. OISS will process requests as soon as we have received all necessary information from you and your host department.
Global, Connecticut and Yale University COVID-19 protocols are updated regularly. Please be sure to review our FAQs for international scholars and our COVID-19 page prior to your arrival in New Haven.
The very first step is for your Yale host department to submit your information to OISS whether or not you require a new visa status. They will provide documentation regarding your Yale appointment title, academic credentials, funding support and other details. The OISS Connect system may ask you to enter your information and upload documents.
OISS reviews the request and will contact you if further documentation is needed. The appropriate visa category for your appointment at Yale will be determined by OISS in consultation with you and your host department.
You will be asked to provide information and upload documents for any dependents that will be joining you during your appointment at Yale.
In some cases OISS will issue a visa document to you so that you may proceed to schedule a visa appointment at a U.S. embassy. Please review this document to confirm that all the information is correct. If anything is wrong or missing, please contact your OISS adviser. Scholars joining Yale using their F-1 Optional Practical Training (OPT) work permission may already have their own immigration status and work permission.
Follow the instructions below depending on your visa type.
