Summer and Post-Graduation Optional Practical Training (OPT)

April 11, 2017

If you are graduating this May and applying for F-1 Optional Practical Training (OPT) or if you are a continuing student and applying for pre-completion OPT for a summer position, now is the time to think about preparing your application. Please remember that you do not need a job or internship offer to apply for OPT; you can submit your application as you continue to look for a position.

Applications for post-completion OPT can be received by the USCIS no earlier than 90 days before your graduation date of May 21, 2017 (i.e. February 22, 2017). If you are not graduating, you can apply for pre-completion OPT 90 days before your employment start date. This year we expect that USCIS processing of OPT will take 90 days. For details about the timing and preparation of your OPT application click here. If you have questions about OPT, please contact your OISS adviser.

For students in J-1 status, Academic Training (AT) is available for post-graduation employment. You must have a job offer with specific employment dates in order to apply for AT. As it takes several days to process your AT request, please submit your application to OISS by no later than May 16th.
